Welcome to Shifting to Science of Reading (SOR)!

This site was created by a licensed K-8 Teacher and Orton Gillingham-trained teacher in 2023. We now have a team of Reading Specialists with several years of experience in a K-2 setting, all of whom have a Master's Degree in either Reading or Curriculum and Instruction. Our training includes Orton Gillingham, LETRS, Phonological Awareness, and Comprehensive OG Plus Training through IMSE. Our team is dedicated to learning the best practices for teaching students to read, and we are constantly expanding our knowledge. We create resources that align with the research behind the Science of Reading.

Shifting to SOR exists because of the constant changes in education and teaching children to read. Our mission is to keep your small reading group lessons up to date with the most recent science and to continually add resources for you to use in your classroom.

Let's face it, most teachers have been teaching reading using a "balanced" approach (including me!). It's hard to think about how things could have been different over the last 20+ years if we were all taught about the science behind learning to read. However, now we know better, so we can do better for our students. So I hope you are ready to take this journey with us in teaching using best practices according to science! This website is devoted to supporting teachers across the U.S. and even the world to do BETTER!

The Shifting to SOR Community is available to all site visitors. Membership includes hundreds of Science of Reading Aligned Resources to support K-1 and Intervention teachers with their small reading groups. Members also receive a private community, members-only resource library, and much more!
