If reading time feels hard right now, you are not alone.
My child guesses at words.
They look at the picture, they remember what the page said last time, or they wait for me to tell them the word. A new book is a struggle every time.
I do not know where to start.
There are hundreds of books and apps. Nothing tells me which book is right for where my child is today, or what should come next.
I want to help, but I am not a teacher.
I did not train for this. I need someone to show me what to do, in words that make sense, without a big time commitment.
None of that means your child is behind, and none of it means you have done something wrong. It usually means the books your child has been given ask them to guess. This vault gives them books that ask them to read.
Why the right kind of book matters
Most early reader books use words your child has not been taught to sound out yet. When a child meets a word they cannot work out, guessing is the only option they have left.
A decodable book is different. That word just means this: almost every word in the book uses letter sounds and patterns your child has already learned. So instead of guessing from the picture, your child sounds the word out and gets it right on their own.
That matters because early success changes how a child feels about reading. When the book fits what they know, they finish it feeling capable. Then they want to read the next one. Inside this vault, every book adds one small new skill and practices the skills that came before it, so progress feels steady instead of random.
Hi, I am Jennie.
I am a former first-grade teacher and reading specialist. I spent years in the classroom watching children who were trying hard still struggle, because the books in front of them did not match what they had been taught.
I built the Decodable Readers Vault first for teachers. Then parents kept asking for the same books in a version made for home — one child, a kitchen table, and about 15 minutes. This parents version is that version. Every part of it was rewritten for parents: where to start, what to do each day, and what to say when your child gets stuck.
You bring the encouragement. The vault brings the plan.
Three steps. That is the whole system.
Step 1 — Find your starting book.
Start Here opens with three quick checks that take about a minute each. They point you to the exact book to begin with. Your child can start as soon as they know their first five letter sounds: a, m, s, t, i, p. If they are not there yet, the Letter Sound Activities inside will get them ready first.
Step 2 — Read for about 15 minutes.
Every book has a two-day routine. Day 1 warms up the new sound pattern together. Day 2 is reading day. A printable session sheet for that book tells you what to do before, during, and after reading, so you never have to wonder if you are doing it right.
Step 3 — Check it off and keep going.
Mark the book off on your Reading Roadmap checklist and move to the next book in order. Each book builds on the last, so you always know what comes next and you can see how far your child has come.
The Reading Roadmap — your map for all 121 books
You never have to pick a book at random. The Roadmap shows all six stages in order, what your child learns in each one, and how many books are in it. Print the full checklist to mark off each book as you finish it. There is a poster version for the fridge, too.
Stage 1 — Lessons 1–24 — 16 books
First letter sounds and short-vowel words like cat, pig, and sun.
Stage 2 — Lessons 25–48 — 24 books
More short-vowel practice, plus blends like flag and jump.
Stage 3 — Lessons 49–69 — 22 books
Digraphs like ship and chat, and early long-vowel patterns.
Stage 4 — Lessons 70–92 — 23 books
Long vowels like cake and bike, and two-syllable words.
Stage 5 — Lessons 93–111 — 19 books
Vowel teams and more advanced patterns.
Stage 6 — Lessons 112–128 — 17 books
Second-grade review and confidence builders that pull everything together.
Lesson numbers are the order in the vault. You read in lesson order, starting from the book your checks point you to.

A Matching Passage for Every Book
Extra practice in the same skill, written in three levels so you can pick the level that fits your child today. Helpful for rereading and building smoother reading.
Session Sheets for Every Book

Take a look inside the vault
Watch the short tour to see Start Here, the Reading Roadmap, and a full book lesson exactly as you will see it after you join.
- Read a book on screen, or download it to print
- Every lesson shows the warm-up, the book, the passage, and any extra activities together in one place
- Works on a computer, tablet, or phone
What one book lesson looks like
- The book itself — read it on screen, print it in color, or print it in black and white for your child to color as they read.
- The word warm-up — the key words from the book, practiced before reading so the book itself feels easier.
- The session sheets — Day 1 and Day 2, with the exact prompts to use.
- The passage — the same skill in a short passage, at three levels.
- Optional extras — word activities and comprehension pages when you want them.
That same layout repeats for all 121 books, so once you learn it for one book, you know it for every book.
Is this the right fit for your family?
This is a good fit if:
- Your child is working on Kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade reading skills
- Your child knows at least a few letter sounds, or is ready to learn them with the activities inside
- You can give about 15 minutes on reading days, at home or on the go
- You homeschool, or you help with reading after school and want a clear plan instead of random books
- You want one membership you can use with all of your children
This is probably not the right fit if:
- Your child is already reading chapter books fluently and needs above-2nd-grade material
- You are looking for a live tutor or a class — this is a self-guided library with training videos, not live instruction
- You need a classroom license for a school — please look at the teacher Decodable Readers Vault instead
How the vault compares
Private tutoring: often hundreds of dollars a month, scheduled around someone else. Vault: learn the same routine yourself for $19/month and read on your own schedule.
Reading apps: your child works alone on a screen, and you cannot see the plan behind it. Vault: you read together, you see the full order of books, and print is always an option.
Leveled book sets from a store: no order tied to what your child has learned, so guessing creeps back in. Vault: every book only uses patterns already taught in the books before it.
The vault does not replace your child's teacher or school. It gives you, at home, the books and the order that make practice actually help.
What parents say
"I used to dread reading time. Now my daughter actually asks to read one of the Vault books before bed. I've seen her skills (and confidence) skyrocket!" — Jessica, mom of a Kindergartener
"The books are short, fun, and easy to use. My son is finally sounding out words instead of guessing." — Chris, dad of a 1st grader

Frequently asked questions
What grade level is this for?
The books cover Kindergarten through 2nd grade reading skills. Most families use it with a child who is working anywhere in that range, including a child who needs extra practice to catch up. You start at the book that matches what your child knows now, not at a grade label.
What if my child does not know letter names and sounds yet?
Your child can start the books as soon as they know their first five letter sounds: a, m, s, t, i, p. If they do not know those yet, start with the Letter Sound Activities inside the vault. Those activities teach letter names and sounds, and the Start Here checks will tell you when your child is ready for the first book, I Sat.
Do I need to be a teacher to use this?
No. This version was built for parents. Start Here shows you where to begin, the session sheet for each book leads each reading time, and the Parent Training Videos show you what to do, including what to say when your child gets stuck.
How do I access the books?
After you join, you log in at shiftingtosor.com/login on any computer, tablet, or phone. From there you can read each book on screen, open the digital reader version, or download and print the book in color or black and white. The printing guide inside Start Here shows you exactly what to print.
How much time does this take each day?
About 15 minutes on a reading day, using the two-day routine for each book. Some families read daily, some read a few times a week. The order matters more than the speed, so go at the pace that fits your family.
Will this help if my child is behind in reading?
It can help with practice at home, because your child will work with books matched to the skills they have actually learned, in an order that builds. Start at the book the checks point you to, even if that feels early — early wins build confidence. This vault is home practice support. It is not a diagnosis, and it does not replace support your child receives at school. If you have concerns about your child's progress, talk with their teacher as well.
How many children can use one membership?
One membership covers all of your children, and any other children you are homeschooling. You use the same login and start each child at their own starting book.
Is this a subscription? How do I cancel?
Yes. Monthly renews each month, quarterly renews every 3 months, and annual renews each year, until you cancel. You cancel yourself anytime in your Kajabi account settings — you do not need to email anyone. If you start with the $1 trial on the monthly plan, cancel before the 7 days end if you do not want the $19 monthly charge to begin.
Do you offer a money-back guarantee?
All sales are final, the same policy as our other memberships, because you get instant access to the full library. That is why the monthly plan starts with a $1, 7-day trial — so you can look inside, find your child's starting book, and try the routine before the monthly price begins.
Is this tutoring?
No. There are no live sessions. You get the books, the order, the session sheets, and short training videos, and you do the reading together at home. Many families choose it because tutoring is hard to schedule and costs much more per month.
Is a Facebook group or community included?
No. The SOR Club and the members-only Facebook group belong to the teacher membership and are not part of the Decodable Readers Vault for Parents. Help with your account and with using the vault is inside Membership Help, and you can reach us through the Contact page linked at the bottom of this page.
What if I am a teacher?
Please join the teacher Decodable Readers Vault instead. That version includes classroom use, editable lesson plans, and the SOR Club. This parents version is licensed for use with your own children at home.
